Noted nut Jose Guillen is out again. This time he isn't suspended or anything. He just injured his wrist. Guillen didn't injure the wrist punching someone or anything insane. He just injured it. That might be the most interesting part of this.
The Nationals don't expect him back for about 3 months, which may be about the lifespan of the team's nickname. On April 3rd, Major League Baseball is going to court to fight for the name.
It seems that back in 2002, a business called Bygone Sports filed a trademark application for the name Washington Nationals. What this means is the Nats may be able to call themselves that Nationals, but they might not be able to continue selling merchandise with the Nationals name on it. Which of course means they would change the name if it came to that.
My personal opinion is the name sucks anyway. But if they wanted it, they should have made sure they had the rights to it. And it sounds like that might not have happened. So when Jose Guillen returns, who knows what his uniform will even look like...
By the way, this wouldn't be the first time something like this happened. Remember the Baltimore Ravens original logo? They lost the rights to that when a judge ruled they lifted it from a security guard's sketch. Weird things happen in the D.C. area, I guess...

Why don't they just call themselves the Senators and be done with it? Of course, I think the players should still all be wearing stirrup socks, the game shoule be played OUTSIDE on GRASS, and managers should be required to smoke Marlboro Reds in the dugout...but don't get me started. Just stay tuned for the 2006 version of Rich Goff's "If I Were Commissioner..." list. It's become quite popular here at work, so I'll pass it on to you, as soon as it's finished.
